How detection actually works

The behavioral layer is the one that changed the game. A script that fires every 87 milliseconds, or applies the same recoil-compensation curve on every spray, produces a statistical signature no human hand does. Because this analysis runs server-side on input data every player already sends, it works identically on console and PC, and it does not care whether the device in the chain is a Zen, a XIM, a StrikePack, or a modified controller. The protocol layer matters at the platform level. In February 2026, ahead of a Black Ops 7 ranked season, Ricochet announced an expanded suite of detections aimed specifically at unapproved third-party hardware, naming the Cronus Zen and XIM Matrix, and stated: "These devices are not permitted in Call of Duty. They are cheating tools, even if they masquerade as accessibility devices." The announced enforcement model is escalating: warnings first, then mitigations, suspensions, or bans for continued use. Ubisoft has said detection confidence weights toward higher skill levels and that it built an appeal path for disabled players using adaptive technology, the only major example of an accessibility exemption process in this space. Microsoft and Sony (platform level)
Microsoft's accessory policy and Sony's compatibility-breaking updates, described above, are platform actions rather than game bans: they block or break the device rather than punishing the account. To date, neither platform holder is known to have issued account bans purely for possessing such a device at the console level; enforcement against accounts has come from game publishers.
Everyone else
EA titles (Apex Legends, EA FC), and most other publishers, prohibit input automation in their terms of service, but have published far less about device-specific detection than Activision, Epic, or Ubisoft. - False positives are possible in principle. Behavioral classifiers make statistical judgments. Ubisoft's appeal path exists precisely because adaptive hardware can resemble spoofing; other publishers offer less recourse.
- Remap-only use occupies a gray zone. Pure button remapping produces no machine-timed pattern for behavioral systems to flag, making it far less exposed than scripted fire or anti-recoil — but it still runs through unlicensed hardware a platform holder may block, and it still typically violates ToS language as written.
